It is no secret that Cambodia has undertaken a number of initiatives to export its goods to top markets in the world. The incentives include bilateral trade agreements and the membership in ASEAN respectively AFTA and WTO. This approach has had a strong impact on Cambodia’s trade integration and economic development.

Cambodia economic growth is based on four major industries such as manufacturing (garment/footwear, rubber), construction, tourism and agricultural sector. Cambodia's currently main export destinations are the United States, EU, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and China. Vietnam and Thailand are also large importers of Cambodian goods.

It is noteworthy to mention that garment and textile products have allowed Cambodia to enter a new age of international trade integration. The garment sector accounts for 80 percent of exports.

Another main export of the country is rubber. Cambodia has a long history of rubber cultivation that began in French colonial times. Rubber has became an important crop year after year increasing the number of foreign investors. All Cambodian rubber is for export, and mostly is exported to Vietnam, Malaysia, China, and Singapore for its further processing.

The Cambodian government also supports the export promotion of the following goods: beer, cassava, corn, sea products, rice including organic rice, rubber, silk including silk handicraft, soybeans, fruit and vegetables, wood products including sustainable construction materials, such as bamboo flooring and others.

It should be mentioned that in the last ten years Cambodia has experienced a significant economic progress of 7.9 percent from 2000 to 2015. The country has an open market economy, with the largest industries being tourism (2 million people visited Cambodia in 2006) and garment industry (textiles). Agriculture still represents the main source of income for the population in Cambodia. The main crop are rubber, cassava, groundnuts, sesame seeds, sweet potatoes, maize, dry beans and soybeans. The country has a great potential of oil and natural gas resources which are however unexplored.

Cambodia is a member of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and United Nations. The major Cambodia's import partners are China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taiwan ans Singapore. Cambodia's biggest source of foreign investment and source of foreign aid is China. Cambodia's foreign policy main goals are to establish friendly relations with the bordering countries, namely Vietnam and Thailand, and integrate into regional and global trading associations.

Cambodia's main imports are machinery, pharmaceutical products, light rubberized knitted fabric, petroleum products, construction materials, motor vehicles, gold, planes, cigarettes. Light rubberized knitted fabric is the number one imported product – 11.2 percent of the total imports. On the second position is situated refined petroleum which constitutes 10 percent of all imports.
